“Drama with Al is the best thing about school” Year 1 pupils talking with Headteacher, Cathie Payne
‘Wonderful – great workshops, totally on task: much enjoyed and commented on by students who are using Al Muir’s dynamic techniques to kick-start their Devising projects’ Head of Drama, Bedales School
‘I am happy to recommend this production of scenes from Bertolt Brecht’s extraordinary play, The Fear and Misery of the Third Reich, directed by Al Muir. This is one of Brecht’s most accessible and powerful plays, a play that remains eternally relevant. For young people it is a remarkable play to study and to experience in the theatre because it makes it emotional, historical and political points so clearly and persuasively.
This particular production captures so very well numerous important aspects of the play, and is a terrific theatrical experience in itself. In terms of the play’s themes the production’s economical design and use of music – with its sparse but realistic props, costumes and furniture, powerful use of Nazi insignia and placards, and projections of deeply moving and shocking period photographs – instantly suggests the historical and dramatic period and location but also informs the audience as to the political, ethical, cultural and racial events of the play’s subject. The direction and acting are also first-class, and are perfectly in the Brechtian style. This project deserves to be seen further afield, and undoubtedly would be ideal for schools and colleges as well theatres.’
